Gyulaj is a municipality in Tolna County, Southern Hungary with a population of about 1 000 inhabitants, more than 20% of whom are Roma. Gyulaj belongs to the disadvantaged micro-region of Dombóvár. Given the rather isolated situation of Gyulaj and the focus of the local economy on tourism linked to hunting, job opportunities for Roma are scarce.
The municipality has nonetheless been active in creating jobs for Roma, mainly through public works or jobs within the municipal services, with quite low wages. Whilst some people in the municipality still depend on social welfare, most are employed either within the municipality or in the private sector. Gyulaj is moving towards the food processing industry, where the construction of various processing plants is planned in the future.
